The Basics of training a puppy

Bringing home a new puppy is full of excitement and new beginnings. Adjusting to your new life with your puppy can be challenging, but fret not! Although it is important to start their training journey early, it is equally, if not more, important to ensure they have proper socialization, structed down times, and of course lots of love and attention. Making sure your puppy has early and on going socialization and training not only helps prevent behavioral issues but also strengthens the bond between you and your fur-baby.

The key to successfully training your puppy is consistency, patience, and positive reinforcement. I've made a list of some basic training tips to help you get started:
Potty Training: The first piece of training any new dog owner should teach their dog or puppy is where they are and are not allowed to use the potty. Establish a daily routine, give them frequent potty breaks throughout the day, never leave them unsupervised (this includes indoors and outdoors), NEVER punish them for having an accident in the house, and reward them every single time they use the restroom outdoors.
Socialization: It's important to expose your puppy to different people, animals, and environments to help them become well-adjusted and confident. Don't allow them to greet every person and dog they meet while out and about. This can actually backfire and cause behavioral problems down the road. Taking them to new places frequently and letting them observe and engaging with them is far more beneficial.
Basic Commands: Commands like sit, stay, come, and down are the foundations to more advanced training. Use food, toys, praise, or play as rewards. Keep training sessions between 3-5 minutes long and have 1-3 sessions per day.
Leash Training: Get your puppy used to wearing a collar or harness and leash early on. Practice walking on leash indoors while rewarding good behavior. Then move to a low distraction area outside, gradually increasing distractions.
Positive Reinforcement: Reward good behavior with food, toys, praise, play, and affection. Positive reinforcement is more effective than punishment in shaping your puppy's behavior.
Remember, training takes time and patience, so don't get discouraged if progress is slow. Every dog learns at their own pace. Consistency is what matters, so practice regularly and be patient with your puppy as they learn and grow. If you're feeling overwhelmed or unsure about how to train your puppy, consider enrolling in a puppy training class or seeking help from a professional dog trainer who can provide personalized guidance and support to help you overcome any training challenges.
